First, to explain the U.S. distinction between BA and BS degrees. These are typically the only degrees offered and the different between the "A" and the "S" has to do with the content of the core curriculum, the arts being more humanities based, and the science being more math/hard science based. The degree is then tagged additionally with the specific area of study.

By way of example, I have a B.A. in Political Science, which means that my core curriculum was broad humanities based, and my major field of study was political science.

I'll be the first to admit that my degree doesn't do squat for getting me a job. But it does tell employers that I was successfully able to complete a program of study. I stuck to it.

That doesn't necessarily make me a better person, or a better potential employee. But, when looking at a pool of 100 people, about whom you know little, a degree is a way of sorting through.

And before anyone gets started, I worked my way through college and grad school, was the first (and only) person in my family to go to college, and didn't come by this the easy way.

It's much simpler than that. The one quality that all the top research companies want now is "Abstract Thinking". Subjects like Maths, Philosophy, even Classics (Latin and Greek) actually foster abstract thinking.

Modern subects, like Golf Course Management, Commerce, Media Studies, Performing Arts, etc. don't.

So the big companies like Microsoft and Google (especially) try to increase the odds of landing the right candidates for them by specifying "old fashioned" degrees.

Postmodernism is not serving the new businesses. It's back to the future, folks. :-)

Bottom line is that if you have to work a typical 9-5 (which most of us sheep have) a degree and even certifications will more than likely earn you more money.

They don't mean you are smarter. I'm living proof. I have a degree and I'm an idiot!

Instead of "link" perhaps I should have said "correlation." now I'm not commenting on whether or not I think the correlation is justified; just that it exists.

Change seems to be happening, but it is happening despite the system.

"But the link between higher degrees and salary is established."

That is because jobs that are posted like Duncan mentioned only want people with degrees to apply. A lot of sales jobs use psychological test and mathematical written tests to see who has the ability to do sales. The same can be done in every field or occupation. Granted there are certain occupations that require a lot of eduaction, like doctors, lawyers, professors, etc. But having a degree in basket weaving should not give you an extra advantage in life such as the marketing job Duncan is talking about. How many bloggers are out there that never went to college that are making a ton of money. They seem to be doing just fine and are marketing themselves very well to say the least and if they to applied for the marketing job in question and did not have a degree they would not even be considered.

Now having said all that I agree with Bald Man that there is definitely a dumbing down of the educational system in America. To that end we only need to look at the "Girls Gone Wild Videos" A bunch of dumbass college girls taking their clothes off for the camera (I have seen the videos) and these are the people who will get a shot at the above mentioned marketing job before I will. Does moral character count for something in the job market.

If you are wondering I just got the domain issue fixed and we should be back on line in a couple of hours. Plus I mentioned earlier that I will be going swimming, well guess what I am going for real right now..........See ya next time.

Higher degrees and intelligence have a dodgy correlation at best. But the link between higher degrees and salary is established. A degree is an easy way to classify someone without working real hard... easy, but not necessarily accurate.

The US has an obsession with the college diploma. By dumbing the system down so everyone can get one, it's making them worth less and less. It's degree inflation.
