There are thousands of WiFi locations in Oz. Most are paid but really who expects to get a good connection without any cost. There was free WiFi trialed in the Brisbane mall for a few years but still I've found most decent hotels along the east coast offer guests free WiFi and heaps of cafes have a hotspot within range.
