Vale Peter Brock 1945-2006

peter brock

Peter Brock, veteran racing car driver, many, many times winner of the Bathurst 1000 has died today doing what he loved doing most: racing.

According to the SMH, Brock was behind the wheel of a car competing in the Targa West rally and crashed into a tree at Gidgegannup, outside of Perth at lunch time today (Friday 8 September).

I may have been a Dick Johnson supporter in my youth, but like many Australian’s I deeply admired the King of the Mountain. For many years it was a family ritual that on a particular Sunday in September we would all sit in front of a television set for the day and watch “the great race” as it unfolded, no mean effort the race itself goes for roughly 8 hours. And year after year one man continued to win on a regular basis: Peter Brock.

Although in recent years, his interview on Denton in particularly may have turned away some fans, he will still always hold the position in the hearts and minds of Australian’s as our greatest ever Touring Car Driver.

My thoughts and condolences to his family at this time.

    Peter Brock

Peter Brock drove his Holden to victory in Bathurst,
He drove as fast as lightning,
Once he won by six laps,
    Taking the title nine times.

“Peter Perfect” as he was known,
Also raced in the Sandown Rally,
Still as quick as a wink,
Winning the title nine times too.

Peter Brock was as calm as the sea,
When driving his Holden to victory,
On the side of the car he had the number 05,
It was his trademark printed on all his cars.

    Sometimes “Brocky” drove a BMW,
Once he drove a Ford Sierra,
He still drove as swift as a snake,
And ended up on the podium.

Peter Brock was an endurance racer,
He always found his way to the finish line,
He was as fit as a cheetah,
I don’t think many people could beat him.

Peter Brock was as legendary as Don Bradman,
This is how he got the name “Bradman of Bathurst”,
The next Bathurst trophy will have his name on it,
As he was an Australian Icon.

The Targa West rally ’06 was his very last race,
When he tragically crashed into a tree,
His career was as perfect as a diamond,
A racing legend that will not be forgotten.
