I read these as they were released and loved the whole alternative universe thing. At the time of publishing he was criticised for selling out and writing pulp airport novels but he admitted that he did it for the money and we all have to eat don't we?

I found that the concepts he came up with thought provoking as well as entertaining not to mention how we as humans interact culturally when confronted with cultures different to our own as in the conflict between the contemporaries and the visitors.

If you are interested in his style of writing and history I'd recommend another one of his. Leviathan: the unauthorised biography of Sydney. It gave me a rounded history lesson into the development of Sydney. This was a entertaining seriously researched piece which gives him the space to write anything that he wants in my opinion.
