Study claims non-breast fed babies more likely to be abused

by admin on January 27, 2009

From the same groups who get all offended at the idea that there’s a correlation between single mothers and youth crime:

Women who do not breastfeed their infants are nearly four times more likely to neglect and abuse their child, a world-first study of Australian women has found….

Dr Strathearn concluded that the promotion of breastfeeding could be a relatively simple and cost-effective way of strengthening the relationship between mothers and babies to prevent child neglect and abuse.

The Age has more.

Unbelievably offensive. Andrew Bolt gets it right

Correlation isn?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t causation…In this case it may well be the other way around as well – that women who abuse their children are also less likely to bother with breastfeeding.

I’d note that I don’t believe that single motherhood results in increase crime levels for the same reason; the correlation is the wrong way around.

Why though has breast feeding zealotry become so acceptable that this type of crap is published? While everyone agrees that breast feeding is good, this zealotry is hatred in a PC cloak. The reality is that not everyone can breastfeed, and as my house knows from experience, that blind nature of breast feeding zealots can and does put lives at risk.

  • Breast feeding your baby is without a doubt one of the best things you can do for your baby, and yourself. However linking the absence of breastfeeding with abuse may need some more study.
  • Yes, I do believe that breastfeeding builds up a good relationship between baby & the mother.Beside this there are alot of advantages of breastfeeding for both mom& the baby.So why not to breastfeed?
  • I believe that breastfeeding is a gift of God.My son is past two years and I still breastfeed him. I recommend breastfeeding to all moms for their own benefit as well as for their babies.
  • Non-sense. I bet they cannot prove this allegations. That doctor only concluded this issue with no proof or something.

  • Breastfeeding is a personal choice, some have they're own reason specifically because of nipple problems. But everyone knows it is the most natural and the most nutritious food your baby could ever need.

i love kids exspecially babies and none of them needs to be abused at all i think its sad when a kid gets abused i think kids are gods gifts some women cant have kids and they do feel bad but most of them do not feel bad at all .
  • I always supported breastfeeding and have breastfed my daughter for 2 years, I would never deprive my child from their birth right!

There may be a lot of reasons why some moms can't breastfeed their babies however, it is highly recommended for parent-child bonding. I remember when I was assisting delivery cases in the hospital, when the baby is delivered, the midwife would let the mom hold her baby right away( of course, after all the necessary procedure to ensure baby's health) to promote parent- child bonding. I believe this has to do with the psychological effect of the mom finally delivering her baby and accepting that the tiresome 9 months is finally over.
  • Breast feeding is a must for every kid , unless until their is certain reason why you can't feed her.I have read several articles about how beneficial breast feeding is for the overall development of th baby.
  • Well said! breastfeeding is indeed a must for every child in this whole world, I have breastfed all my kids, its very important in the overall health of a child.
  • Before our daughter was born in the early 1990s, we attended several sessions at our local hospital. One of these was hosted by the La Leche League. Although it wasn't their intent - I don't think - the tone of the La Leche League presentation could be summed up as "If you don't breast feed your kid, you don't deserve to be a parent."

Excellent point on correlation vs. causation.
